Food Harvest 2020 Milestones - organic opportunities

29 July 2011 By Editor

IOA welcomes the launch by Minister Coveney of the Food Harvest 2020 Milestones for Growth. Minister Coveney emphasised his “wholehearted commitment to building on this good start and to making sure that the ambitious smart green growth vision in Food Harvest 2020 is realised”. Last year there was a 11% upturn in agri food exports. Organic food exports from Ireland contributed to this mainly in the seafood and beef sectors.

“We are delighted that Minister Coveney is highlighting Ireland’s green credentials as one of the major objectives in developing the agricultural sector in Ireland” said Dr. Sinead Neiland, Chairperson of IOFGA. “We are also optimistic that it shows higher commitment to the development of the organic sector here. Sales for organic produce are increasing both at home and abroad this is extremely encouraging and illustrates that we need more Irish organic products to meet market demands. Organic food is the ultimate “green sustainable food” and Irish organic products are in demand globally. This is an excellent opportunity for the organic sector to shine and we look forward to working with the Minister to achieve this”.

Organic opportunities for Green Public Procurement

14 July 2011 By Editor

It is estimated that the Irish public sector procures food and catering services to the value of €125m to €150m per annum[1]. This transfers a large responsibility to government to deliver value for public money in terms of goods and services provided.

EU guidelines for Green Public Procurement (GPP) are being introduced here which essentially means that a certain percentage of publically procured food must meet EU sustainability criteria. This is good news for Irish food producers particularly organic and artisan producers.

Dr. Sinead Neiland, Chairperson of IOA welcomes the move and states that “seasonal local organic food should be offered on all public menus such as hospitals, schools and workplaces. Research has shown that where organic food is part of public procurement it has resulted in better tasting food and significantly less food waste. When procurers buy local and in season it reduces cost and food miles. GPP offers great opportunities for organic food producers in Ireland while at the same time improving the quality and sustainability of food on public menus”.

IOA certify over 1,150 organic producers, processors and retailers in Ireland.
