 Where
to buy organic food
Organic food is available in many supermarkets, health food shops,
and independent retailers.
Farmers markets and direct selling
Direct selling - whereby the consumer buys directly from the producer
- has really taken off in Ireland in the past few years. Consumers and
producers both benefit because the producer gets a good price for the
product and the consumer gets good value since there is no middleman to
take a percentage. Direct selling is most common throughout the country
in the form of farmers markets. Our magazine Organic
Matters carries a list of markets around the country and contact details
for the organisers.
Organic box schemes
These are literally boxes of organic food products either delivered to
your door or collected by you from the producer. The system varies from
place to place but generally customers arrange to receive a set order
each week with some degree of flexibility for individual preferences.
Products offered range from vegetables and fruit to juices, eggs, and
meat.
Farm Shops
Farm Shops and farm gate sales are another way of direct selling increasingly
used by organic producers. Some farmers open a shop on their premises
six days a week while others may operate for only two days a week. The
range of products on offer also varies.
